The Sea of Persuasion
I'm am immersed in a sea of persuasion as my friend's try to convince me to stay up late and study (when all I really want to do is go to bed), my mom and dad try to encourage me to save money, and internet pop-ups try to get me to buy their products. When I listen to speeches they are usually trying to persuade me to do something that will make my life "better." The media is constantly trying to persuade me to dress a certain way and buy certain products as television commercials seem to be on all the time. To become a more critical comsumer of persuasive messages I can evaluate the information I am getting by thinking about what the seller is getting out of it. For example, think about why they want me to make the product and how reliable and valid of a source they actually are.

I know what you mean! I never thought about how we are constantly being persuaded by our own friends and family. I was mainly looking at how the mass media effects me. You are completely right, I meanwith drinking, partying, and staying up late, picking a certain major and going to a certain school to meet your parents expectations. It is a good idea to look at the situation at hand and try to be critical about it in a way that you can use your best judgement. Looking deeper into something to see if it is truely a valid source or not can help.
I can relate exactly to what you're saying. Isn't hard to resist at times though? The media and advertising definitely plays a big role in that. A lot of people buy certain things not because that they need it, but because it's the "it" thing that everyone has and that they too should have. I mean a good example are the game consoles, everyone has to have the latest "Xbox" or "Playstation" regardless of how much it costs and even if they already have one just like it. I too have fallen for making unnecessary purchases ...
I can definitely relate to example of staying at a friend’s house to pull an all nighter study session for a huge test and fighting to keep my eyes open with my friend convincing me to stay up for just one more hour. I think the internet emails and pop-ups from all the different stores I like to shop are the worst especially when to have advertisements like “get (this) free when you spend forty dollars!” I know I always find myself thinking, ‘hmmm, what should or could I get?’ You are exactly right, the only way to be a critical consumer or persuasive messages is to consider what the product is, what it will do for you, and what the advertiser gets out of you purchasing.
